2020 will be remembered mostly for a pandemic,  but also for changes in the packaging industry, where we experienced price increases in corrugate, polyethylene, stretch film and foam to name a few. In addition, several hurricanes  hit in the resin production territories, causing lead-timesto  extend beyond the typical production time.

Yet, through it all, Murphy Packaging was able to minimize price increases and lead-times due to our inventory management system and the ability to bring in inventory prior to price increases. Our planning gave our customers an extra one to two months of lower costs.

Below is a summary of the total percentage increases by product line in the packaging industry during 2020.

Plastic Strapping

5-6%

Stretch Film

15-20% **

Steel Strapping

4-6%

Corrugate

6-8% **

Foam

8% *8

Polyethylene

15-20% **

** These products have already had a minimum of one price increase with a prediction of a 2nd in 2021.

As indicated above, these price increases do not seem to be slowing down with the start of 2021. Now, more than ever, it’s critical to align yourself with a supplier that is able to help you navigate through the months ahead.
